Shelter Manager:
JOB SUMMARY
The Shelter Manager is a full-time position overseeing the front-of-house staff to ensure proper
animal care protocols are followed. In addition to training front-of-house staff and performing reviews
for the front-of-house, the Shelter Manager maintains a constant flow throughout the shelter
regarding animal movement. The Shelter Manager also maintains the budget for shelter income
and expenses. The duties of the Shelter Manager include but are not limited to the list below.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES
Make and implement hiring decisions for all front-of-house positions in alignment with the
organizational chart and needs
Hire, supervise, evaluate, promote, discipline, and terminate shelter staff
Develop new programs and services
Perform annual performance reviews for front-of-house employees
Disburse funds within approved budget limits
Communicate with HR about staff
Ensure proper procedures and policy documentations are complete for the entire shelter and
available to staff
Continue to improve customer service at the shelter and teamwork among staff members
Communicate with HR about postings for job openings
Expedite and oversee all animal movement with intakes, adoptions, foster/rescue, spay/neuter
surgeries, and veterinary care
Coordinate adoption events with the Volunteer Coordinator and the Animal Care Manager
Point of contact for Animal Control
Ensure all national animal databases are up to date with shelter statistics
Assist with shelter maintenance
Ensure all cleaning protocols are followed and in line with shelter standards
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The Shelter Manager will work both indoors and outdoors. Must be able to work at a computer
for extended periods of time. Must be able to stand, walk, and move for extended periods of time.
Must be able to have reliable transportation to conduct all work in and out of the shelter in
Summerville. This role requires flexibility and the ability to stand, lift, kneel, crouch, and bend.

Animal Care Technician:
This position offers both full time and part time & the pay is $13 an hour.
JOB SUMMARY
Is an integral part of our mission by promoting the humane treatment of companion animals through protection, placement, education, and example. This position is a vital part of our Shelter. Kennel Technicians must be self-motivated, team players, dependable, multi-task, and enjoy caring for animals! The Kennel Technician is responsible for the general care and maintenance of all animals at Dorchester Paws. The Kennel Technician is an important part of the team as he/she is the first to report if there is a problem with an animal.
OVERALL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to work well with cats and dogs.
- Possess reliable transportation to/from work.
- Possess a minimum of a high school degree or equivalent.
- This position requires many detailed tasks and multi-tasking abilities. Must be able to work effectively in a team environment.
- Ability to work during the week as well as weekends and holidays.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• General care and maintenance of all animals
• Maintain and clean animal kennels and cages
• Feed and water all animals
• Monitor and document food and water consumption
• Document and report animal temperament, behavior, abnormalities, and food/water intake
• Walk animals to maintain their physical and mental health.
• Support Dorchester Paws in daily functions, including the facility’s general care and maintenance and all animals.
• Engage with the public to introduce potential adopters to animals, perform meet-and-greets between adopter-owned dogs and “shelter” dogs, process adoptions, answer phone inquiries, and intake animals
• Rinses, scrubs, and disinfects animal cages and outdoor runs, hallways, floors, walls and isolation/quarantine areas, transport carriers, etc.
• Feed and water animals according to schedules and feeding instructions.
• Perform general cleaning duties such as facility laundry and washing animal bowls.
• Walks through the kennel areas checking each animal individually for any abnormal activity such as vomiting, diarrhea, or blood in the cage
• Perform animal grooming duties, such as washing, brushing, clipping, trimming coats, cutting nails, and cleaning ears.
• Collect, prepare, maintain, and record animal information, such as weight, size, physical condition, treatments received, medications given, and food intake.
• Bring animals to and from the kennel during cleaning procedures.
• Clean up after animals both inside the facility and outside, and clean animal runs and cages as needed.
• Maintain the shelter by performing tasks including, but not limited to, sweeping/mopping floors, wiping counters, taking out the trash, cleaning bathrooms, and checking equipment and supplies.
• Assist other staff members on occasion with such tasks as helping restrain an animal, helping clients with their pets, etc.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This job function is both indoors and outdoors of the shelter. Duties will take place at Dorchester Paws that require consistent walking and outdoor-related work tasks. This role routinely uses cleaning supplies and equipment. This role requires regular and extended standing and walking. This role requires flexibility and the ability to stand, lift, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, or stand as necessary. This position also requires frequent lifting or moving of objects or materials up to 50lbs. This is a full-time position. Days are flexible; however, hours will be in the range of 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, 5 days a week (part-time hours can be 8am-12pm and 12pm-5pm or 8am-5pm a few days a week).
